Colonial Mentality

       Filipinos nowadays prefer American products than the local ones. Buying product that aren't from the Philippines is okay, but some people are choosing American products than our products. I think we should do something about it because all our money is going to the US, and it is lessening our money here in the Philippines, which means we should really do something about it. I am Trisha Marie Yu here to talk about our country and one of its weaknesses, Colonial Mentality, a common problem to us Filipinos. 

      
      If I had to choose if I could work in the US or here I would work in the United States because they pay higher there, but I wouldn't just keep the money for the US. I would come back to the Philippines and simply spend the money here. Filipinos even like to patronize imported products over the local ones. WHY? That is because Filipinos think that the products that are Philippine made are easily broken, and that the products from America are better. That may be true, but the Philippines is really trying to make good products to make the Filipinos satisfied, but some Filipinos doesn't even bother to try the Philippine products. Filipinos even choose foreign singers, movies, western fashion, etc. over the local ones. The reason for that is because they understand it better rather than Filipino music or movies; moreover, they also think it is better than Filipino music, fashion, singers, and more. Filipino students like to speak english too; that is because their schools focus very much on one language and that is english. They want the children to be good at english, and they are.

       As an Ateneo Hearter I can overcome colonial mentality by being a royal filipino. I will buy local products, and I won't hesitate to buy them. I will not completely give up on buying foreign products to because if everyone doesn't buy foreign products anymore, the store will close down and more filipinos will be jobless. I can also promote our own culture simply by embracing it and making become a part of our lives, and also sharing it to people and they will like it too. Together we can stop colonial mentality and make the Philippines overcome this weakness.
